Supreme Court of India orders mass audit of NGOs by 31st March 2017

The
Supreme Court of in India in a bench headed by the Chief Justice of
India ordered on 11th January 2017 an audit of 3 million NGOs and penal
action against those found not submitting their records in time.
Once again the targeted NGOs are those receiving funds from government or foreign sources under FCRA.
Passing
detailed orders on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate
M L Sharma in 2011 seeking a tab on functioning of NGOs,  a bench
headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said, “mere blacklisting of NGOs who
do not file annual statements will not will
not suffice but also action must be initiated like criminal proceedings
for misappropriation and civil action for recovery of given funds.

The Supreme Court order came after Amicus Curiae, Senior Advocate Rakesh Dwivedi cited a CBI report that only 10 per cent of NGOs filed annual income and expenditure statements.
